In this session Friesen will explore the sources and contours of Menno's theology. In terms of sources, the early writings of Luther, especially on the Catholic mass, and the biblical works of Erasmus, especially his paraphrases on the gospel of Matthew and the Acts of the Apostles will be inspected. But central to his theology is his own conversion experience, an experience Menno attributed the work of the Holy Spirit. The Reformation scholar, Hans Hillerbrand, once called Menno an "irregular" theologian as contrasted with a "regular" one - a definition taken from the great Karl Barth. We shall challenge this and all other interpretations and argue that Menno's theology is a "missional" theology. And it grows out of Erasmus' interpretation of Christ's Great Commission.
Council of Senior Professionals:
The Fresno Pacific University Council of Senior Professionals was established in 2002 to recognize and encourage continuing contributions by senior university and seminary faculty. The council brings together senior scholars, artists, educators, church leaders and other professionals to pursue mutual interests in an academic community that benefits the university, seminary, church and community.
The mission of the Council of Senior Professionals is to serve as a senior resource group to the sponsoring institutions and the larger church and community, and to support each other as members, both individually and collectively, in pursuit of continuing (a) inquiry and learning, (b) research, writing and other creative work and (c) service to the university and seminary, church and world.
In weekly seminars, members, visiting professionals and others share their work and pursue topics of historical and current interest.
