After graduating from Tabor College and completing his alternative service to the draft, Martens began his career teaching high school English. In 1965 he joined the English faculty of Fresno Pacific, providing leadership over the years in the development of the English program of the university.
Along the way Martens also practiced what he taught. Resulting are essays, stories, a novel, a doctoral dissertation on C.S. Lewis and the like. Readings from these various writings will be shared in this session.
Council of Senior Professionals:
The Fresno Pacific University Council of Senior Professionals was established in 2002 to recognize and encourage continuing contributions by senior university and seminary faculty. The council brings together senior scholars, artists, educators, church leaders and other professionals to pursue mutual interests in an academic community that benefits the university, seminary, church and community.
The mission of the Council of Senior Professionals is to serve as a senior resource group to the sponsoring institutions and the larger church and community, and to support each other as members, both individually and collectively, in pursuit of continuing (a) inquiry and learning, (b) research, writing and other creative work and (c) service to the university and seminary, church and world.
In weekly seminars, members, visiting professionals and others share their work and pursue topics of historical and current interest.
