This session will feature a panel consisting of Jim Gaede, a social worker and educator, Larry Martens, a pastor and church leader, and Jill Schellenberg, a victimology/peace educator.
The issue of sexual abuse is a critical issue in our society and the church. Churches within the Mennonite Anabaptist communities are not immune. The panel will seek to describe the endemic nature of sexual abuse, provide descriptions of offenders and victims and how the consequences of sexual abuse impacts the offender, the offended as well as their families and communities of the church and its institutions. Ideas will also be shared how our churches and institutions might deal with this sensitive issue.
Council of Senior Professionals:
The Fresno Pacific University Council of Senior Professionals was established in 2002 to recognize and encourage continuing contributions by senior university and seminary faculty. The council brings together senior scholars, artists, educators, church leaders and other professionals to pursue mutual interests in an academic community that benefits the university, seminary, church and community.
The mission of the Council of Senior Professionals is to serve as a senior resource group to the sponsoring institutions and the larger church and community, and to support each other as members, both individually and collectively, in pursuit of continuing (a) inquiry and learning, (b) research, writing and other creative work and (c) service to the university and seminary, church and world.
In weekly seminars, members, visiting professionals and others share their work and pursue topics of historical and current interest.
